The Greenhouse Initiative
The Greenhouse initiative is a way to grow quality produce and sustain a business in the Harmons community. Starting with our first greenhouse in 2009, Won By One To Jamaica has empowered local community members to nurture the vegetable plants and then harvest the tomatoes, peppers, and other produce. By then selling the produce to tourist areas on the island, we are able to employ many community members with jobs year-round. We also make the produce available to the local community at wholesale prices.
We have now expanded to three greenhouses and grow a variety of vegetables. Volunteer groups that come on a trip often help us with some of the basic needs of the greenhouse, but the business and the day-to-day running of the greenhouse project is done completely by local Jamaicans.
The Fish Farm
In 2011, we added a fish farm to our greenhouse project. Housed within two of the greenhouses, we are raising tilapia. These fish will be made available to community members as a healthy source of protein to add to their diets or as a way for them to sell it in neighboring communities at a profit to serve as a micro-business opportunity.
